Dave's work as a costumed historical interpreter at Historic Fort Snelling in Minnesota led to his portrayal of frontier army officer and artist Seth Eastman in the award-winning Twin Cities Public Television documentary "Seth Eastman: Painting the Dakota".
AUGUST FIBER ART EXIBITION: "Climate Change" Exhibit Opening: Date to be announced
Special group showings by appointment The Fiber Art Study Group (FASG), based in Minneapolis, has conceived and produced a powerful textile art exhibit titled "Climate Change." Completed in 2007, the 24 works reflect diverse social, political and personal perspectives on the topic of climate change. The artists' interpretations include works that explore the ecological implications of global warming, the relationship between humanity and the planet we inhabit, seasonal transitions, and the emotional aspects of change in the context of personal relationships. FASG is a collaboration of 13 textile artists whose mission is to support and inspire each other's artistic growth, create unique and meaningful work, and generate awareness of contemporary fiber arts both to the art and broader communities. Its members' work consists of contemporary art quilts and other fiber art of original design. From September through May, the group meets weekly at the Textile Center, a national center for fiber art located in Minneapols: http://www.textilecentermn.org/artcloth.asp In early 2007 the 13 artist members of the Fiber Artists' Study Group unanimously agreed on "Climate Change" as a topic for an exhibit. As a group we believe art can be a compelling way to visually demonstrate social, political and environmental issues. In fiber art, images and symbols become a powerful tool for raising awareness and increasing consciousness. FASG members hope the art in this exhibit will move those who see it to act in ways that conserve, protect and save our magnificent planet and all of its creatures. ****************************************** CONCERT/LECURE SERIES:
Duke Addicks' powerful storytelling presentations have fascinated hundreds of audiences of adults and older children. Duke portrays Scottish-born fur trader James Aird who tells stories about his own Mississippi River adventures and those of his wife, Grey Cloud and other historical personages of the fur trading era. Duke will also play a variety of Native American flutes as part of his presentation. Nita Gilbert and Mary Duncan, a versatile vocal/piano duo from the Twin Cities area will perform songs of the Native Americans and pioneers which reflect the times along the St. Croix River and Minnesota during the mid-19th century. Nita and Mary also perform music ranging from classical to Broadway to jazz to folk. Both are native Minnesotans who have combined their wide-ranging life experiences to perform music with a message for the 21st century. ******************************************* FOUR FIBER ART CLASSES: SILK PAINTING GREETING CARDS Elna Goodspeed Create six greeting cards using Elna's silk painting process. Elna will provide quality cards, silk, paint and her own stamps for a class fee. Half hour break to allow silk to dry. Students should bring lunch and their own stamps if they wish.
SILK PAPER JOURNAL CLASS Kathleen Smith Participants will create silk paper to adorn the cover of a small journal. The basics of fusing silk fibers together, embellishing, and attaching the paper will be covered in class. Supply fee will cover silk, journal, and other supplies.
SOYWAX BATIK SHOPPING BAG Cyndi Kaye Meier Come create a reusable canvas shopping tote. In class we will create a soy wax resist and then apply fiber reactive dyes. The end result will be a beautiful tote to carry your groceries. Soy wax makes great batik resists, but best of all is that it dissolves in hot water.
KOOL SUMMERTIME FELT Karen Wallach Come get your hands wet and mess around in the soapy bubbles. No experience in felting is necessary. Students will learn how to dye wool using Kool-aide brand drink mix. Students will then take the brightly colored fibers and transform them into a felted coaster. **********************************************
